Toplining means writing the melody, lyric and vocal performance over an existing track or beat. You learn to find the hook first, place it where the track peaks, and build verses that support rather than fight the production. Lyric work covers prosody (matching stressed syllables to strong beats), stable versus unstable phrasing, perfect, family and assonance rhyme, imagery and point of view, and writing a title that can carry a chorus.
You study how melodies are built from motifs through repetition, sequence, inversion and extension, and how contour, range, phrase length and the mix of steps and leaps give a line its shape. On the harmony side you work with diatonic progressions in major and minor (I, IV, V, vi and their functions), cadences, borrowed chords, secondary dominants, harmonic rhythm, and the relationship between chord tones, non-chord tones and the tonal centre.
This module maps the sections of a song and what each one does: intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, post-chorus, bridge or middle eight, breakdown, solo, tag and outro. You compare verse-chorus form, AABA thirty-two-bar form, strophic and through-composed writing and the twelve-bar blues, then learn to plan contrast between sections using harmonic rhythm, melodic range, note length and lyric perspective, so a bridge or final chorus lands with purpose.
You programme drums from the kick, snare and hi-hat outwards, working with step sequencing, quantisation and partial quantisation, swing and shuffle, humanisation, ghost notes, velocity and accent patterns, and fills at section changes. Sampling, chopping and layering of one-shots and loops sit alongside sound selection and tuning of drums to the key. The aim is a groove with push and pull that still locks to the grid where it matters.
Working in the arrangement view, you turn loops and clips into a finished timeline. You learn subtractive arranging (filling every track, then removing what the section does not need), section markers, insert and delete time, clip fades and crossfades, volume and parameter automation, transitions with risers, reverse cymbals and filter sweeps, and how muting or dropping elements creates contrast so the arrangement has shape rather than staying static.
The producer holds the whole record in view. You cover pre-production (tempo, key, demo and reference tracks), arrangement decisions and instrument choice, session planning and budgets, coaching performers and running tracking sessions, vocal production including take selection and comping, editing and tuning, and briefing the mix and mastering engineers. You also learn where the executive producer, A&R and engineer roles begin and end.
You learn the ranges, registers and transpositions of the string, woodwind, brass and percussion families, then how to assign melody, bass and inner parts across them. Topics include doubling at the unison and octave, divisi, passing a line from oboe to flute to cello, balance between sections, articulations such as legato, staccato, pizzicato and arco, mutes and harmonics, score order, and building convincing MIDI mockups with velocity, attacks and releases.
This module deals with how a chord is spread across instruments or hands. You work with close and open position, drop-2 voicings, inversions, shell voicings built on the third and seventh, and tensions such as ninths, elevenths and thirteenths. Voice leading covers stepwise motion, parallel and contrary motion and conservation of motion between chords, applied to tonic, subdominant and dominant functions and to ii V I movement in pop and jazz contexts.
You shape energy across a track using both written dynamics (pianissimo to fortissimo, crescendo, decrescendo, subito changes) and production tools. That means controlling density and layering, adding drum layers and faster hi-hats towards a peak, filter sweeps and automation, risers and white noise, snare rolls, removing low end or reverb before a drop, strategic silence, and call and response between parts, so tension and release feel deliberate.
You learn to run a session from setup to final take. Topics include choosing dynamic, condenser and ribbon microphones and their polar patterns, pop shields and shockmounts, basic acoustic treatment, headphone cue mixes, multitrack recording and overdubbing to a click, punching in, capturing multiple takes for comping, DI boxes for bass and guitar, double tracking, and clean editing with crossfades so nothing distracts from the performance.
You learn to place microphones with intent. Close and distant miking, the 3:1 rule for avoiding phase problems between mics, and the proximity effect that adds bass to directional mics up close all come first. Stereo work covers spaced pair (A/B), coincident XY, near-coincident ORTF, NOS and DIN, Blumlein with two figure-of-eight mics, mid/side with adjustable width, and binaural capture, plus listening for off-axis colouration.
This module follows a signal from source to speaker. You cover mic level and line level, preamps, analogue to digital conversion, interfaces and patchbays, then console and DAW routing with inserts, aux sends and returns, buses and the monitor mix. Gain staging ties it together: unity gain, headroom, noise floor, clipping and metering in dBFS, so every stage in the chain is set correctly before any creative processing.
You build a mix from a static balance to a finished picture. Work covers gain staging, level and panning, subtractive and additive EQ, compression and de-essing, reverb and delay on sends, bus and VCA grouping, and stereo bus processing. Automation is central: read, touch, latch and write modes, riding the vocal, automating EQ for momentary emphasis or resonance control, and filter sweeps and send levels that change with the arrangement.
Mastering prepares a mix for release. You learn a chain of corrective EQ, compression and multiband compression, saturation, mid/side processing and stereo width, then limiting to set final level. You read loudness meters, spectrum analysers, correlation meters and vectorscopes, check mono compatibility, and use reference tracks for translation across systems. Bit depth reduction is covered with dither and noise shaping, applied once and last in the chain.
You learn to measure and deliver to standard. LUFS metering covers integrated, short-term and momentary loudness with K-weighting, while true peak (dBTP) shows inter-sample peaks after conversion. You work to the -14 LUFS integrated norm used by streaming loudness normalisation with a true peak ceiling around -1 dBTP, then prepare deliverables: 24-bit WAV masters, 16-bit 44.1 kHz Red Book files, DDP images for CD with PQ codes, CD-Text, UPC and ISRC codes for each track.
